A visit to Fraser Island must include a trip to the beautiful Lake Mckenzie. Its a fresh water lake in about the centre of the Island that’s a great place for a picnic or a swim. The water is a bit cool so in the cooler months you may find it a little too cold for a swim but many people still venture into the water.
The sand is very white and feels soft to walk on. Because the lake is surrounded by a giant sand filter the water is very clear and it’s so pure it supports very little life. So there is no chance you’ll be eaten by a shark.
The lake contains only rainwater, is not fed by any streams and does not flow out to the ocean. The sand and organic matter at the base of the lake form a waterproof layer, preventing the rainwater from draining away.
